FACULTY OF HUMANITIESDEPARTMENT OF MODERN EUROPEAN LANGUAGESPROFESSOR / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR AND HEAD OF DEPARTMENT (ONE POST)In pursuit of the ideals of excellence and diversity, the University of Pretoria wishes to invite applications for the above vacancy.The University of Pretoria's commitment to quality makes us one of the top research Universities in the country and gives us a competitive advantage in international science and technology development.RESPONSIBILITIES:The incumbent will be responsible for:• The strategic, academic and operational management of the Department;• Promoting the Department’s research profile;• Promoting a high standard of academic teaching and best teaching practices;• Playing an active role as academic leader of the discipline at a national and international level;• Fundraising for departmental activities;• Providing or facilitating mentorship for young academics in the Department.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:• A doctorate in French, German, Portuguese or Spanish;• Senior academic status in the relevant discipline;• A proven research and publications record;• A proven postgraduate supervision track record;• Experience in high-level liaison with internal and external stakeholders and professional boards;• An appropriate vision for the Department;• International recognition as academic;• Resource mobilisation, including fund raising;• Strong leadership and communication skills.RECOMMENDATIONS:• Managerial experience at a tertiary institution;• A strong research record in one of the Department’s research specialisation fields;• International recognition;• Preference will be given to candidates holding a PhD in French.The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines.
