One of the top ranking Ph.D. French Departments in North America,the Ph.D. Program in French at the City University of New York (CUNY) is best characterized by its commitment to cross-disciplinary studies.The Program trains its candidates in both traditional and contemporary cutting-edge approaches to literature written in French. It offers courses on literary periods and genres, as well as on theory and its impact on the humanities. In addition to the study of literature, students may focus on one of the Program’s fields of concentration : Comparative Studies, French Cultural studies, International Human Rights in the French Speaking World, Performance Studies, and Translation Studies. Students are encouraged to opt for a multidisciplinary Certificate, which they can fulfill at the Graduate Center. These include : American Studies, Film Studies, Interactive Technology and Pedagogy, Medieval Studies, Renaissance Studies, Women’s Studies.
Located in the heart of New York, the Graduate Center offers an unusual wealth and breadth of advanced, graduate-level courses. In combining students’ literary interests with interdisciplinary options, our Program provides students with exceptional assets in an increasingly competitive job market.
Beginning in fall 2013, the Ph.D. Program in French will award several Graduate Center Fellowships in recognition of academic achievement and in expectation of scholarly success. The fellowship provides full tuition and $25,000 each year for the first five years of study. The fellowship consists of a stipend in the fall and spring semesters, a summer research stipend, a graduate assistantship, a tuition award, and eligibility for low-cost individual or family NYSHIP health insurance. Support for the fall and spring semesters is $23,000 and the summer research stipend is $2,000.
