A French Light on Irish Painters

Roderic O’Conor and other Irish painters are amongst those who found in the cultural life in France a range of enabling influences and opportunities. These included further study under painters in France and the technical innovations of their peers as well as the variety of light and landscape. Another important aspect was the traditional freedom of artistic society in France, and the opportunities it offered for living and working conditions.
Dr Angela Ryan Agrégée de l’Université http://publish.ucc.ie/researchprofiles/A015/ar lectures in the French Department UCC on French literature and ideas. Her violons d’Ingres are painting and singing .Her book on George Sand is forthcoming with Editions Champion, Paris. She has published on French art and music and has given lectures to the Friends of the Crawford Gallery, and other artistic and academic institutions, on Camille Claudel, on Franco-Florentine art and music patronage in the 16 th century, on Van Gogh and Millet, on the theory and philosophy of perspective, and on the tragic heroine in painting and music.
