PhD Teaching Assistantship in French Studies / Poste d’ATER pour doctorant(e) en Études françaises Twentieth-century French literature & culture / Littérature et culture françaises du vingtième siècle
The Department of French Studies at Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick is pleased to announce that an assistantship is currently available for a PhD in French Studies on any topic related to twentieth-century French literature and culture. Preference may be given to candidates working on the following areas of interest: transnational studies, Franco-German relations, French colonial history and the trials of decolonization; French intellectual history; Representations/constructions of the French Republic and national identities; Impact and legacies of World War II; 20th-century French & Francophone literature.
The successful candidate will have her/his fees (approx. €4,500 per year) paid for the normal duration of her/his programme of studies (max. 3 years) and will be awarded, for each year, a sum of €6,900 in return for undergraduate teaching to a maximum of six hours per week in semesters 1 and 2 (maximum 130 hours in total).
To be considered for this assistantship, applicants must send their complete application so that it is received by noon on Thursday 1 st November 2012 at the latest . It is expected that the successful candidate will be able to begin either on 1 st January 2013.
This award is open to Irish, other EU students and non-EU students alike, however n on-EU students should note that in order to satisfy visa requirements the new stipulation from the Department of Justice & Law Reform is that from 1 st April 2011 all non-EU students must have access to €3,000 on an Irish bank account and are required to have private medical insurance.
The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr Mairéad Ní Bhriain.
Applicants must have:
• a good MA in a relevant subject area (French Studies, Comparative Literary Studies, Lettres modernes, Français Langue Etrangère, or equivalent);
• native or near-native level of competence in French;
• fluency in written and spoken English;
• two academic references.

Research proposals written in French will not be considered.
The research proposal must include the following headings:
• Aims and objectives
• Substantive outline of the project (with proper references)
• Originality and relevance of the project (including location of the project within the current literature)
• Methodology and/or hermeneutical perspective
• Relevant bibliography
